Developing rituals and creating daily habits leads to success. The people that are most successful have created daily rituals that help them start their day off right. Their rituals help them put their best foot forward, keep their day on track, and make them more productive.
Daily rituals of successful people establish routines that get you moving on autopilot, ensuring that your mind is focused on the important decisions you need to make throughout the day. Rituals, habits and routines are what can make you successful on a daily basis!
Don’t Hit Snooze
Get out of bed when your alarm goes off! You will not only feel more energetic, but you will also find you have more time for yourself. Fortunately for me, I quickly discovered my dog has a natural alarm clock, so she wakes me up each morning around the same time whether the alarm goes off or not. She will not let me hit snooze!
However, if you are like some of my friends and struggle to get up when the alarm goes off, they use an alarm clock with a natural wake-up light that stimulates your body and helps you wake up naturally. This is a great way to make sure you get your butt out of bed on time each day with more energy, and more time.
Make Your Bed
I’ve found this to be a habit that helps jump start your productivity for the day. As soon as you get out of bed in the morning, quickly make your bed. (If your spouse or partner is still sleeping, you can wait until after you shower or eat breakfast, but try to make sure it’s made before you head out the door.)
Just the habit of making your bed helps you feel a sense of accomplishment first thing in the morning. Even author Gretchen Rubin makes a habit of making her bed each morning because it not only instills happiness, but as she says “tackling one easy daily step is a good way to energize yourself for tougher situations” the day may have in store for you.
Take 5 To Meditate and Take 5 To Be Grateful
When you take a few minutes in the morning to meditate and clear your mind, your day will start refreshed. Additionally, take another five minutes to express gratitude for the things in your life. A great way to do both of these is to keep a journal close at hand, like The Five Minute Journal which provides a structured format and inspirational quotes to help get you started.
The few minutes you take at the beginning of the day to meditate and be grateful sets your day off to a successful start filled with positivity, happiness, and inspiration.
Eat and Nourish Your Body
You know you need a wholesome breakfast in the morning to get yourself going, but you also need to eat healthy throughout the day. Choose foods with healthy protein, carbohydrates, and some fat in each of your meals. Take time to eat slowly and enjoy your meals, being more mindful of the foods you put into your body. Slow down and fuel up with healthy foods throughout the day.
Move Your Body
As the day goes on, it’s often difficult to make sure you stay active and don’t just sit on your butt all day long. I don’t always realize how long I’m sitting either at my desk, reading a book, or watching TV until I look at the time and see an hour (or two) has gone by. Research has shown that sitting too much can decrease our life span, so it’s important to move more throughout the day. Obviously working out a few times a week is great for your body, but getting into the habit of spending a few minutes walking every hour not only improves your overall health, but also helps clear your mind and gives you more energy.
Personally, fitness trackers help motivate you to reach your activity goals every day by setting goals. I have the Fitbit One which tracks steps, miles, stairs climbed, and calories burned and I strive to hit each goal every day. The the app will also track your sleep activity, food, and water intake. Once you find a habit that works for you, a daily routine will quickly develop to keep you moving throughout the day.
Unwind and Relax
You also need a ritual or two at the end of your day to unwind and relax to help ensure your get the best sleep you can. Whether it’s reading a book, taking a hot bath, or meditating, choosing something that helps you relax prepares your mind and body for sleep. I always read my book for 10-15 minutes and take some deep breathes which helps me easily fall asleep every night.
When we develop daily rituals of successful people, we set ourselves up for our own success each day. It’s important to create habits that work for you and you enjoy, otherwise the habits won’t stick. Now it’s time to get up, make your bed, meditate and be grateful, eat healthy, and keep your body moving!
