If you take a look at the people that have been successful in life, most of their success comes from developing good habits that helped them achieve success in goals they set for themselves. It is often those habits, as well as intrinsic motivation and determination, that helps the most driven individuals succeed. As I scrutinized different articles, research papers, and stories, I found 10 habits that seemed to pop up over and over, so I thought I would share those with you. Here are what I have found to be the top 10 habits for success.
Desire to Learn
The innate desire to learn something new drives successful people to continue developing their skills and gaining new insight. Even people that have gained success in their finances, relationships, family, and career want to continue to learn more. There are always new revelations in your field of expertise and keeping on top of those is important. However, there is a world of unexplored territory out there – you can learn to draw, learn a new language, learn to scuba dive, and learn to cook gourmet meals. Successful people never stop learning!
One of the most frequently mentioned success habits was organization, which encompasses setting priorities and goal, and developing an action plan to reach them. Before you go to bed each night, scratch out a “to-do” list for yourself prioritized with the most important tasks to get done. Daily to-do’s are your baby steps toward accomplishing your monthly, yearly, and lifetime goals. Keep yourself accountable by staying organized in your progress toward succeeding in your goals.
I found it interesting that another highly mentioned habit was relaxation, since it involves stepping away from your to-do list. Relaxation or meditation helps you prepare for what’s coming next. One of the easiest ways to do this is to stop what you are doing for a few minutes, close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Relaxation comes to some people more easily than others, but it is a gateway to success.
Many successful people have the ability to think positively about not only the situation they are in, but also on those yet to come. When you remind yourself about why you are grateful it helps you stay positive about your own situation. Be thankful and show gratitude, and you will find that positivity will follow.
Successful people understand the value of having good relationships to exchange ideas with others. It also builds a level of happiness through a fulfillment of your social network. Successful people know the value to surrounding themselves with other intelligent, successful people. It is the people we surround ourselves with that have the biggest impact on our day to day lives and whether or not we will achieve the goals we set for ourselves. For example, one of the research articles I read said that 79% of wealthy (successful) people spend at least 5 hours a month networking; by contrast, only 16% of poor (unsuccessful) people network consistently. Build and keep relationships with the right people!
People often associate being frugal with being cheap, but they aren’t the same thing. Frugality is really the act of being thrifty, economical, and cost conscious. Frugal people avoid waste, which makes them more efficient in saving money. The successful, wealthy people avoid overspending by buying only what they need, comparison shopping, and negotiating (and even bartering). It eventually becomes a simple habit of saving more than they spend.
I truly believe that living a frugal life can make you a happier person, and when you are happier, your path to success becomes a lot easier.
Ability to Act
Anyone can set goals and create a list of things to do, but it’s the successful people that make it a point of consistently taking action to complete their goals. It’s the successful person that knows the first step is the hardest, and therefore act quickly to get started on the path to success.
Eating well, exercising daily, and good personal hygiene are all habits of successful people. When you ask successful people what daily habit has the most positive impact on their life, you will often get some type of healthy habit. This also includes staying away from bad habits that can hurt your health and happiness like smoking, drinking (in excess), and eating junk food.
One of the habits that a lot of successful people have adopted is getting up early. Early mornings provide uninterrupted time for many of the other success habits to actually happen – like meditating, exercising, reading, and learning something new. You don’t have to get up at the crack of dawn (like me every morning at 4:30), but rising early tends to be a habit shared with many successful people.
Successful people read for both pleasure and learning. It’s an important habit to instill at a young age. Reading is not only important to gain more knowledge, but it has also been show to improve your emotional intelligence by learning to empathize with others better.
“Read as much as you possibly can. Nothing will help you as much as reading.” ~J.K. Rowling
Everyone has habits that help create a daily routine, some are good and some are bad. However successful people tend to have more the good habits that help contribute to an overall successful, happy, positive life. The best habits I mentioned above don’t involve changing your whole routine, and you can always start with small changes. For example, you can start a healthy habit of exercising more by taking a walk or going to the gym a day or two extra during the week. Or you could start reading more by getting a library card and downloading some ebooks from the library.
Some habits take a little more skill and practice, but ultimately if you want to achieve the most success in your life, you should adopt habits that lead you on the path to success. What habits are you going to start today to help you succeed?
